ETF FAQs

What is an ETF?

An ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is an investment fund that trades on stock exchanges, similar to individual stocks. ETFs hold a collection of assets such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, providing investors with diversified exposure to various markets or sectors through a single security.

How do ETFs differ from mutual funds?

ETFs differ from mutual funds in several ways: ETFs trade on exchanges throughout the day like stocks, while mutual funds trade once daily at the closing price. ETFs typically have lower expense ratios, greater transparency, and no minimum investment requirements. Additionally, ETFs offer more tax efficiency due to their unique structure.

What are the types of ETFs available?

There are seven main types of ETFs available:

  • Index ETFs: Track specific market indices
  • Equity ETFs: Invest in stocks
  • Bond ETFs: Invest in fixed income securities
  • Commodity ETFs: Track commodity prices (gold, oil, etc.)
  • Currency ETFs: Invest in foreign currencies
  • Real Estate ETFs: Invest in REITs and real estate companies

What is a leveraged ETF?

A leveraged ETF uses financial derivatives and debt to amplify the returns of an underlying index. For example, a 2x leveraged ETF aims to deliver twice the daily return of the index it tracks. However, leveraged ETFs are designed for short-term trading and carry significantly higher risk. They can magnify both gains and losses, making them unsuitable for long-term investors.

Can ETFs pay dividends?

Yes, many ETFs pay dividends. When the stocks or bonds held within an ETF pay dividends or interest, the ETF collects this income and distributes it to shareholders, typically on a quarterly basis. Investors can choose to receive these distributions as cash or have them automatically reinvested to purchase additional shares of the ETF.
